The colors on my Palette in Old Master's Painting
I use a modified version of the Old Master's color palette than includes the following (but I may use other colors as well depending on the subject matter):
Lead white, (cerulean blue is a recent pigment in place of Smalt or Ultramarine blue), Naples yellow, Yellow ochre, Indian red/Red lead, Vermillion red (Cadmium red is a more recent discovery and very toxic) Earth green, Carmen or rose madder, umbers and ivory black. Earth colors predominate. Lead based white and Naples yellow are toxic but very durable. The modern artist has a fuller gamut of colors, but has lost the medium and methods of painting.
More on the history of pigments here
I mix the Venetian and Flemish Maroger mediums with the pigments. The mediums are also used in the preparation of the painting surface and is laid down on the area to be painted before each session.
For my oil paitings I use the finest Belgium linen canvas, or I paint on Ph balanced gessoed boards.
